Outside The Line Collective

Updated: Jul 3, 2021

On view June 15-July 16, 2021. Gallery reception is 5-7pm Friday, June 18, in the BCA Gallery and on Pattee Plaza.

Outside the Line Collective is a group of artists assembled by Steve Purtee in 2013. After selecting a photographic image, the image is divided into sections. Each section is printed and randomly assigned to a different artist. Each artist then develops their interpretation of the assigned section on a prepared panel. They work independently in their studio with no knowledge of what the other artists are doing or what the complete image is. They are encouraged to try new materials, styles, and techniques they may not have used before. After a designated amount of time, everyone is brought together to assemble the completed work. All this is to heighten the element of chance relationships that can spontaneously develop.

The artist in the collective come from a mix of fine art as well as theatrical backgrounds. Some members also exhibit their own work as well as with the Collective. Noteworthy Broadway shows members have worked on, individual or together, include Jersey Boys, Kinky Boots, Book of Mormon, Fiddler on the Roof, Phantom of the Opera, Once, Beautiful, Mary Poppins, Shrek the Musical, Cinderella, The King and I, Matilda, and many more. Film credits include Spiderman 2 & 3, Men in Black 3, Far From Heaven, Across the Universe, Zoolander, A Beautiful Mind, Eat Pray Love, Carlito’s Way, Meet Joe Black, A League of Their Own, You’ve Got Mail, Horse Whisperer. Television includes Saturday Night Live, Boardwalk Empire, Sex and the City, Law & Order, 30 Rock, The Big C, Orange is the New Black, Billions, Mr. Robot, The Sopranos.
